Early Detection and Prevention of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Current Challenges and Future Direction

Presented By Rania H Younis, BDS, MDS, PhD

BCDA is pleased to welcome Doctor Younis for her presentation this evening of important information related to understanding of epithelial lesions of the oral cavity. Understanding of these conditions by the dentist is of fundamental importance for early detection and prevention of oral cancer. Some indolent lesions, like frictional keratosis, might resemble leukoplakia – the most common oral potentially malignant lesion – or even invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma. Moreover, some autoimmune mucocutaneous conditions can overlap with clinical features of erythroplakia or erythroleukoplakia. The process of diagnosis, treatment and follow up can be worrisome to the patient and challenging to the dental provider. This course will cover the increased risks for oral cancer, modes of prevention, and intervention.

Doctor Younis received her BDS and MDS from Alexandria University, Egypt, after which she practiced general dentistry for six years. Doctor Younis then received her Ph.D. in Oral and Experimental Pathology from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2011. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Board Certified in oral and maxillofacial pathology. Doctor Younis was awarded the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) for the year 2011-2012 in craniofacial research. Her research focuses on early detection and prevention of oral cancer, as well as interaction of oral cancer with the surrounding microenvironment, specifically tumor immune suppression and evasion. She currently serves as Director of OralPath_DentCare, LLC in Ellicott City, and is Associate Professor, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt and Associate Professor, University of Maryland.
