"The Tongue Tells a Story - Discussing Etiology and Impacts of Oral Dysfunctions"

The important role dentistry plays in understanding the structure, function and behavior of the oral facial complex and their relationship to the airway, sleep and function will be discussed.  The dental team is a key part of the health care system with screening, educating and advocating for healthy airway and oral function and their impact on total body health. Techniques for screening every patient for risks for oral facial muscle dysfunction, such as airway disturbances and Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders will be reviewed. The participants will learn about the value of healthy nasal breathing, oral rest posture and collaborating with a health care team.  



Cheryl Shafer, RDH BS COM

Cheryl Shafer, RDH BS COM, is a Certified Orofacial Myologist, National Speaker and owner of Facial Function. 

After practicing as a Dental Hygienist and Community Health Educator she is now specialized in oral function and breathing disorders; helping those with oral facial myofunctional disorders such as mouth breathing, tethered oral tissues, noxious oral habits, forward tongue rest/swallow, and facial pain; while collaborating with an integrative team of medical and dental providers.

As a National Speaker, her mission is to empower the dental team to recognize oral dysfunctions and impacts on health and wellness.
