We are privileged this evening to have as speaker, Doctor Lou Berman. His topic covers first, the most important first step when considering endodontic treatment – Diagnosis. Unfortunately, periapical radiographs can only give us part of the radiographic assessment. CBCT offers an entirely different look at the root morphology and periapical tissues. From visualizing root resorption, root anomalies, canal orientation and prognosis assessment, CBCT is the most dramatic breakthrough in endodontics since the surgical microscope. In cases of complex diagnosis or questionable prognosis assessment, a CBCT analysis has been shown to change the treatment plan for an endodontic case almost half of the time. This very clinically-based presentation will review the nuances of CBCT technology and how it is now a necessary component of endodontic assessment and treatment.

At the end of the evening, participants will understand the various three-dimensional planes observed in a CBCT scan; understand the advantages of CBCT over periapical radiographs; recognize the three-dimensional location of root resorption and better understand the causes of endodontic re-infections.

Dr. Berman received his dental degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, and his Certificate in Endodontics from The Albert Einstein Medical Center, a hospital-based endodontic residency program. He is a board certified endodontist and Fellow of the American College of Dentistry. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Endodontics at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and a Clinical Instructor and Guest Lecturer at The Albert Einstein Medical Center. He has lectured inter¬nationally in the field of endodontics, and has published in several different national dental journals, including the Journal of the American Dental Association, Journal of Endodontics, Journal of Periodontics, Journal of General Dentistry, and the Journal of the Maryland State Dental Association. He is past president of the Maryland State Association of Endodontics and is a member of the Journal of Endodontics Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Berman is the senior author for the chapter on Diagnosis in the ninth, tenth and current eleventh edition of the leading endodontic textbook, Cohen’s Pathways of the Pulp, where he is also the co-editor, available in 16 different languages. He is also the senior editor and contributing author of the comprehensive textbook, Dental Traumatology, which has since been translated into Spanish and Japanese.

Dr. Berman founded Annapolis Endodontics in 1983 and transformed the practice into the premier endodontic specialty group of this area. He retired from clinical practice in 2024 and remains with the practice as Partner Emeritus.
